An excellent place at which to start or end a Norwegian yacht charter. It has a sheltered ice-free harbour with modern facilities, dramatic mountain views and is convenient for crew changes, being on the Hurtigruten coastal steamer route and with a good air service to other major cities.

Yachts are welcomed and are increasingly catered for in Tromsø, which has an enthusiastic local sailing community. There is a chandlery supermarkets, open-air fruit market selling fresh vegetables, fish and souvenirs.

Fresh fish and prawns are sold directly from fishing boats and there is also a fresh fish shop by the market square. Tromsø offers plenty of bars, restaurants and open air cafes.

It is possible to sail under the midnight sun from June until July. The warmest time of year are the long days in August, or see the nature explode in breath taking colours when autumn comes in September and October. At this time of year it is also possible to see the Northern lights and whales return to this area every year to feed.
